At a joint press-conference of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held in Istanbul, the Russian President declared as follows: “As to regards the situation in Syria our positions are identical as well as in regards the aims that should be achieved there. Nevertheless, we are not yet in a position to find common approaches to the methods to solve the problem. There have sprung to life some new ideas but it would be too early to tell about them”.
Any reasonable person would be shocked by such declarations. What does it mean “identical positions” regarding the situation?
Until recently Turkey described the situation in Syria as a liberation struggle of the popular forces against the bloodthirsty tyrant and was of the opinion that an external intervention would be required to overthrow the regime of Asad. On the other hand, the Russian authorities stated until now that some armed groups often heated by outer reactionary forces have been fighting against the legal government of Syria. Where is the identity of the positions regarding the events here? Perhaps the sides have come to some common grounds? What are these grounds?
The positions regarding the aims to be achieved totally coincide?
But the Turkish authorities insist on military intervention and on univocal overthrowing of the acting Syrian authorities whereas Russia still recognizes the Syrian government as legal and is against any external intervention into Syrian affairs. What common ground did they find here than?
V. Putin told that Foreign Affairs Ministers of both countries had been ordered to go on discussing that issue between them. Knowing well the unscrupulous mercantile position of the Russian authorities in previous conflicts (Iraq, Libya) we feel anxious. We are afraid of yet another betrayal of an old ally that is only guilty of its regional politics that is independent from the USA and Israel, the betrayal that is carried
out in the interests of global Imperialism led by the USA.
